We need to take off our makeup every night to allow our skin to breathe. Sleeping with a full face of makeup will lead to clogged pores and blemishes. It’s also important to ensure you’re removing your makeup correctly, simply cleansing once isn’t enough. Read these expert tips to make sure you’re cleansing the right way.

Pre-cleanse

It’s important to remove your makeup before cleansing so that you’re not mixing the cleanser with the day’s makeup and dirt build-up. There’s a lot of choices for a pre-cleanser – wipes, cleansing oil and cleansing balms - and your choice really comes down to personal preference.

Cleanse twice

Make sure you always cleanse your skin twice to ensure you’re giving it a thorough clean. Be careful not to scrub too hard though, as this will leave your skin feeling dehydrated and irritated.

Remove excess oil

If necessary use a cotton pad and toner to remove any excess oil from your skin. This is also a good step to determine if you’ve cleansed well – we recommend repeating step 1 if the cotton pad is picking up any makeup or dirt.

Don’t forget your eyes

Some eye makeup such as eye liner or mascara won’t come off as easily as the rest of your look, especially if you’ve used water-proof products. Use a cotton ball saturated with eye makeup remover to gently cleanse your eye area. Take extra care during this step as the area around your eyes is particularly sensitive.
