What happens to your skin in winter?

Skin that feels dry, cracked or rough is something we all experience every time winter rolls around – but why? And what can we do about it?

In the wintertime, having skin that feels dry and tight is an all too common experience. When the weather’s cooler, the lack of humidity in the winter air strips your skin of its natural oils, causing your skin to lose moisture – leaving you with dry, rough, and even scaly-looking skin.

The cooler air can also irritate your skin, causing existing skin problems such as dandruff, psoriasis and eczema to flare up.

Winter weather isn’t kind to the lips either – the cold winds can leave your lips feeling dry, chapped and sore.

The simple solution to this seems to be staying indoors with the heater on full blast – but the dry air created by indoor heating systems can also dry out your skin.

To help combat this, it’s important to have a skincare routine in place that’ll help keep your skin moisturised, healthy, and ready for the spring.

For the Face

Make sure you’re exfoliating and moisturising throughout the winter, using masks intermittently to help draw out nasties from your skin. Start with an exfoliator like Alya Skin Exfoliator, and follow it up with the Alya Skin Pink Clay Mask. Once you’ve let the mask sit, remove it with a warm, wet towel and finish up with the Alya Skin Moisturiser. For those of us with more sensitive skin, sebamed’s Moisturising Cream will help to alleviate any dryness you might be experiencing.

For the Hands

Soothe those dry, rough hands with the sebamed Hand & Nail BalmApply as often as necessary, making sure you massage it thoroughly into the skin.

For the Body

Perfect for those of us with sensitive skin or skin conditions like eczema, the sebamed Moisturising Body Lotion will keep your skin soft, soothed and hydrated.

When showering, make sure you’re not using water that’s too hot (even though it’s tempting!) as the hot water can also dry out your skin. The sebamed Face and Body Wash will help to protect your skin from dehydration - this soap and alkali free wash is pH balanced, meaning it won’t be stripping your skin of its natural moisture when it’s already struggling!

For Those Chapped Lips

Sun Bum CocoBalm – this new arrival to Beauty HQ is infused with aloe and coconut oil to help keep your lips hydrated and smooth. It’s also available in three varieties: Ocean Mint, Groove Berry and Pina Colada.

The All-Rounder

Purple Tree Miracle Balm – whether you’ve got dry patches, chapped lips, cracked or peeling skin, this handy little all-rounder comes in a 25ml tube that you can just pop into your handbag and carry around with you all winter long. The Purple Tree range is available in many varieties to suit your needs, including shea butter, coconut and aloe.

Don’t Forget Your Sunscreen!

Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you can skip the sunscreen – even when the sun isn’t out, spending time outdoors without any protection can still expose your skin to harmful UV rays. For protection against 98% of UVB rays, opt for an SPF 50. Sun Bum’s 177ml SPF 50+ Lotion has a lightweight, non-greasy formula that enriches your skin with Vitamin E while protecting you from the sun.
