If you’re prone to ‘sensitive skin’ then we don’t need to tell you how that feels or what it looks like. You know all too well the irritation and hot feeling after using a heavy cream or soap; the red flush of an allergic reaction; or worse, a more permanent issue like eczema flaring up when you use the wrong thing on your skin or let it get too dry during winter.

Firstly, be aware that you are not alone (a small relief, we know)! Sensitive skin affects over 60 per cent of women, and it doesn’t discriminate on skin type – normal, dry, oily, combination – any one of these can still suffer from sensitivities. Bummer! But don’t think this means you can’t have the benefits of some incredible beauty boosters. There are plenty of amazing cleansers, creams and makeup products that are perfect for sensitive skin. Here’s our list of what to look for, and also some of the things you should avoid.

Cleansing

Always go for fragrance-free, sulfate-free and pH-neutral, and never anything that requires heavy scrubbing or harsh exfoliation. We love the Clinelle Hydra Calm Pure Swiss Cleanser. Make sure you use lukewarm water – never hot, as hot water will strip the skin of much-needed moisture. As daily skincare goes, keep it as simple as possible. Avoid alcohol-based toners and opt for an antioxidant hydrating mist instead. Use products with natural ingredients, and only a few. Where others might be told to exfoliate once a week, keep it to once a fortnight or every 10 days if you have sensitive skin.

Moisturising

Hydration is SO important for sensitive skin, but again simple is best. Look for hypoallergenic ingredients like vitamin E, pro-vitamin B5 and natural anti-inflammatories like aloe, chamomile and coconut oil. Moisturise face and body daily to help avoid problems like eczema. Want an ageing product that will be fine for your skin and do wonders to freshen your face? Treat your eyes with Transformulas Marine Miracle Eye Cream.

Protecting

Because the weather can be nasty for sensitive skin, sunscreen is a must. However, it’s important to use one that won’t be too harsh or clog pores. Always use a non-comedogenic style (no fragrance or parabens either), so natural sunscreens like zinc are a good option. And always go for the highest possible SPF. We love Sun Bum SPF 50 Original Zinc Oxide for face.

Making up

Thanks to so many great natural makeup brands, you don’t have to avoid using makeup if you have sensitive skin. Because they are more likely to have a few more ingredients and chemicals for colour though, always make sure you patch test first. Look for natural, organic and “sensitive skin” labelled brands. Avoid petroleum-based products. And test out different options that are slightly lighter on your skin. For instance, we love a BB or CC cream for daily use instead of foundation.
