Summer is everyone’s favourite season… until we remember how the heat, sunshine and humidity wreak havoc on our beauty routine. Cue frizzy hair, bikini bumps and oily skin, to name just a few. Luckily, these fast fixes will help banish all your hot weather horrors.

Breakouts and shiny skin

During summer, your oil and sweat glands kick into overdrive, leaving you with shiny, dirty, oily and all round unhappy skin. And it’s not just your face that loves to breakout in summer – your back and décolletage can too. Firstly, switch to lighter skin care products, like a gel-based moisturiser (not only is it lightweight and sinks in quickly, it also has a cooling effect on skin). When cleansing, make sure you also lather up on your back and chest. We love Puretopia Rinse Away Face Cleanser, which also contains aloe vera to soothe parched, sun soaked summer skin. For your makeup, look for shine-free, matte formulas, especially with your foundation and primer. Hint: If you love a radiant complexion, swap your dewy foundation for a simple sweep of highlighter over your cheekbones.

Ingrown hairs

The last thing you want in summer is to miss out on the poolside action because of ingrown hairs and red bumps around your bikini line. First of all, before you reach for the wax (we love the pre-waxed Andrea Assorted Wax Strips for Face and Body) make sure you soften the area and help open the pores. A warm washcloth will do the trick, or spending a few minutes in a warm (not hot) shower before you begin. Secondly, for the 24 hours after waxing, avoid exercising (yes you have our permission!), taking a dip in the pool or ocean, sunbathing and taking a hot shower –all of which will irritate the area and bring on those bumps. Finally, don’t forget to exfoliate regularly along your bikini line, as well as anywhere else you waxed. This helps prevent hairs from getting stuck below the skin’s surface.

It’s ok, it happens to even the most diligent of us sunscreen wearers every once in a while: usually on the first day of summer where we get a little too excited to soak up the sun and a little too forgetful with reapplying sunscreen to our super pasty skin. We’ll forgive you this time, but seriously, don’t let it happen again –slather yourself in Sun Bum SPF 50 Spray every time you leave the house for long-lasting protection. If you do end up with sunburn, the best way to soothe it is with an aloe vera gel like Sun Bum Cool Down Aloe Gel. It works in two ways – the gel formula cools skin and takes away the burning sensation, while the aloe vera is an excellent anti-inflammatory that will soothe and rehydrate your beyond-parched skin. Sun Bum’s aloe gel also contains tea tree oil, which will help the healing process. Don’t forget that your lips are prone to sunburn too, so lacquer up with a lip balm that contains an SPF, like Sun Bum SPF 15 Lip Balm –we’re obsessed with the zesty Key Lime flavour!

Frizzy hair

So many things work against your poor tresses in summer. There’s the moisture in the air that zaps all the body out of your hair and leaves you with frizz, then there’s that darn sweat at it again, this time turning your roots oily, and finally the harsh sun can dry out your mane. To combat loss of moisture from your strands, grab yourself a hydrating conditioner like Puretopia Shine & Gloss Conditioner (but if your roots are a little limp, make sure you only apply it from the mid-lengths to ends) and treat your hair to a weekly hair treatment to keep your strands nourished and less prone to dryness and frizz. For oily roots, always have a dry shampoo nearby. It will soak up the excess oil and also add volume at the roots. We can’t go past the coconut scent of Polished London Cornwall Coconut Dry Shampoo.

Patchy tan lines

It doesn’t matter if you tan under the sun (slathered in sunscreen, of course) or go down the faux route, it’s tough to get an even all-over tan every time. Dry patches on your body thanks to dehydrated, sun exposed skin can cause fake tan to turn patchy if you don’t exfoliate properly beforehand. We recommend Bondi Sands Dual Action Exfoliating Mitt; it makes prepping the skin a cinch. If you find yourself with unsightly tan lines from staying out in the sun too long and from not applying your sunscreen regularly, then enlist the help of a fake tan like Bondi Sands Bronzer to even things up (you can choose from their Light/Medium or Dark shade, depending on your level of existing colour). Apply fake tan to areas that are lighter than everywhere else, such as on your hips where your bikini was covering you, and around the sleeves and neck. The next day, apply your self-tanner all over to create a flawless sun-kissed glow from head to toe.
