False lashes may look harmless enough, and we all know the basics of applying them (add glue, stick to lashes), but somehow they still seem to have us beat. Until now. With the help of these false lash hacks, we are confident you can master the technique in no time.

Hack 1: Apply your falsies under (not over) your real lashes

Hack 1: Apply your falsies under (not over) your real lashes

This is probably where you’ve been going wrong all these years, and who can blame you – it’s how we were first taught to apply a set of false lashes. But the technique has since been refined and reworked and now the go-to way the pros apply false lashes is underneath the lash line, not above it. It’s a little trickier to apply them this way on your own and will take some practice (hint: the false lashes still need to stick to your natural lashes, not the skin on your lash line), but you’ll get a much more natural look, they’ll stay put for longer, and they’re so much more comfortable.

Hack 2: Always curl your lashes first

Hack 2: Always curl your lashes first

Before you go reaching for the glue, first you need to create some curl in your natural lashes so they’re at the same angle as your falsies. Flat natural lashes paired with ultra-curled false ones is a dead giveaway. It also makes it easier to access your lash line when your lashes are curling away at the roots. We recommend Ardell Precision Eyelash Curler – you can also use it on your false lashes to give them some extra flick.

Hack 3: Use tweezers to apply your false lashes

Hack 3: Use tweezers to apply your false lashes

Holding your hand still (and not shaking them like a polaroid picture!) is tough. Using tweezers will help you have a steadier hand. It also means your hands aren’t cluttering the area so you can actually see where you’re supposed to be applying your falsies. Speaking of seeing what you’re doing, we love the built-in LED light in the La Tweezer Pro Illuminating Tweezers to shine some light on the area for better visibility.

Hack 4: Make sure you trim your fake lashes to fit

Hack 4: Make sure you trim your fake lashes to fit

One size does not fit all when it comes to false lashes. If you’re applying a strip rather than individual lashes, measure them to fit from your first inner lash to your last outer lash and cut to size.

Hack 5: Give your eyelash glue time to dry before applying to your lashes

Hack 5: Give your eyelash glue time to dry before applying to your lashes

Yes, you read that right. Once you brush your lash glue onto your falsies (when applying them under the lashes as per Hack #1, make sure you put the glue on top of the strip), leave them to start drying for at least 30 seconds so the glue becomes tacky. Then apply to your lashes and reap the rewards of longer-lasting, stuck good and proper, lashes. Our tip:

Try a black glue like Ardell Lashgrip Strip Lash Adhesive – Dark if you’re wearing eyeliner over the top as it won’t show through.

Hack 6: Hide any mistakes with eyeliner

Hack 6: Hide any mistakes with eyeliner

Some days you just can’t get your lashes to sit perfectly straight across the lid, and other days you end up with glue everywhere. That’s ok – that’s what eyeliner is for. Draw it over the top and hide any imperfections. Too easy.
